Coach Application

1. Purpose

To ensure a consistent, transparent, and safe process for vetting and accepting both paid and volunteer coaches for the Iowa Wild Wings youth hockey program.

2. Scope

This procedure applies to all individuals who wish to coach any team within Iowa Wild Wings, regardless of compensation status.

3. Definitions

  • Paid Coach: A coach receiving monetary compensation for their services.

  • Volunteer Coach: A coach who contributes time and expertise without monetary compensation.

  • AAU Requirements: National standards that all participating coaches must meet under AAU Hockey guidelines.

4. Qualifications

All coaches must:

  • Be at least 18 years old.

  • Be AAU-registered and provide proof of current registration.

  • Complete required background checks and abuse prevention training.

  • Demonstrate prior experience with youth hockey or relevant playing/coaching experience.

    • Submit a coaching resume or summary of hockey experience.

    • Provide references (2 preferred for paid roles).

    • Upload proof of AAU registration and SafeSport completion.

  3. Interview:

    • Participate in a brief interview with the Director or designated board member.

    • Paid coaches may also interview with a parent representative if requested.

  4. Screening:

    • Complete a background check through the approved provider.

    • Confirm compliance with SafeSport and AAU guidelines.

  5. Board Approval:

    • Coaching candidates are reviewed and approved by a majority board vote.

    • Emergency approval for short-term substitute coaches may be granted by the Director and one additional board member.

6. Expectations Upon Acceptance

  • Sign and abide by the Coach Code of Conduct.

  • Attend preseason orientation and midseason check-ins.

  • Follow all team policies regarding communication, player development, and game management.

  • Participate in team community events, including at least one sponsor recognition appearance per season.

7. Compensation (For Paid Coaches)

  • Compensation is negotiated annually and outlined in a signed agreement.

  • Payment schedule and deliverables are tracked by the Treasurer.

  • All paid roles are considered contractors; 1099 forms will be issued where applicable.

8. Termination or Resignation

  • Coaches may be removed for violation of policies, misconduct, or failure to meet obligations.

  • Resignations should be submitted in writing with two weeks’ notice when possible.

  • All coaching materials and jerseys must be returned promptly.

While USA Hockey programs do a great job of introducing kids to the game, many players are looking for additional opportunities to challenge themselves beyond the half-ice format. Our team provides a full-ice experience that supplements their current development, allowing them to face top competition while playing alongside other dedicated teammates.

  • What is the Iowa Wild Wings?

    The Iowa Wild Wings started as an 8U AAU hockey team that supplements USA Hockey half-ice programs by providing full-ice competition opportunities. We focus on skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship in a competitive, travel-based setting.

  • Does my Player Have to be in Des Moines?

    Nope!

    We welcome players from all over, we just request team players that are willing to work hard in competitive environments.

  • What is the commitment level?

    Every thing is a-la-carte for Iowa Wild Wings. Practice and tournament rosters will be individual sign ups based on availability.

  • How many tournaments does the team participate in?

    All tournaments are a-la-carte commitments, based on player availability. Locations are primarily in Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Missouri.

    In addition, we will look for Friendly Match opportunities locally when available.

  • Where do practices take place?

    Optional practices will be held in the Des Moines Metro Area at local rinks. The specific schedule will be provided prior to the season.

  • Why AAU?

    The Iowa Wild Wings were founded to give young players a chance to compete at a higher level while connecting with other passionate hockey families.

    While USA Hockey programs do a great job of introducing kids to the game, many players are looking for additional opportunities to challenge themselves beyond the half-ice format.

  • How does this program differ from my child’s USA Hockey team?

    This program is an additional experience designed to complement, not replace, your child’s current USA Hockey team.

  • How much does it cost to participate?

    All costs are a la carte depending on individual registrations.

    Each tournament fee will cover tournament registration, non-customized jerseys, and snacks. Sponsorships are available to help offset costs.

    Travel & equipment fees are the responsibility of the individual families.

  • Are there fundraising opportunities?

    Yes! Families can secure sponsorships, and excess funds may be refunded or credited toward future team costs.

  • What happens if my child can’t play in a tournament?

    Tournament fees are non-refundable after a roster commitment has been made unless the team secures a sponsorship that covers the cost.

  • Are families required to volunteer?

    Yes. Each family must sign up for at least one volunteer role per tournament to support the team’s operations. Volunteer roles include team coordination, game streaming, photo capturing, and more.

  • What happens if a player or parent violates the Code of Conduct?

    Violations will be addressed by the coaching staff and team management. Consequences may include reduced playing time, suspension, or dismissal from the team, depending on the severity of the infraction.

  • What is the MVP Bucket Hat?

    For each tournament, there will be a unique Iowa Wild Wings MVP Bucket Hat in which the players vote for the player who hustled and showcased captain energy. The player gets to wear that hat until the next game in the tournament, and can only earn it once per tournament. A player cannot vote for his/herself, and gets to keep the tournament hat if they earn the coveted title in the final game of the tournament. This program is meant to recognize effort build confidence within the team.

  • How do I Register for AAU?

    Each individual player will need to register for an AAU membership at https://play.aausports.org/.

    Membership is $40 a year, and we will need the player’s official AAU # in order to be added to any practice or game roster.
